Hello, we’re Chris & Amanda — and we chose to create our own detour.
We’re a full-time RV family of four. On July 13, 2021 we moved into our RV and started exploring the country one detour at a time. We document the real, the hard, and the incredible — because we believe everyone deserves to live a life they’re excited about.
Both Chris and our oldest daughter live with Type 1 Diabetes. Life handed us obstacles, and instead of letting them define our limits, we let them define our direction.
How we got here.
Life Before the Road
Chris owned a digital marketing business from 2009–2019 before becoming a Realtor. He was also the author of The Life of a Diabetic — one of the most widely read Type 1 diabetes patient blogs in the world. Amanda was an elementary school teacher for five years, then ran her own Etsy business making custom tumblers and holiday ornaments.
The Idea That Changed Everything
Stuck at home like the rest of the world, with two T1D family members putting us in the “high risk” category, we started thinking differently about travel. A 2AM YouTube rabbit hole — one video of a family living in an RV with their kids — flipped a switch. We went through hundreds of floor plans and brands until we found the perfect fit.
We Hit the Road
On July 13, 2021 we moved into our 2022 Grand Design Solitude 3950BH-R and officially became full-time RVers. Chris had gotten his mortgage license to work remotely from the road. Amanda traded the classroom for the open road. And we never looked back.
Still Going — No Plans to Stop
Years later we’re still out here, now in our Alliance RV, exploring the country with our two daughters. Chris helps other families buy the right RV through Bish’s RV. We partner with brands we genuinely believe in. And we keep documenting the real, unfiltered life on the road — T1D and all.
