White Sands National Park is one of the most unique and stunning destinations in the United States. This park is a true gem and a must-visit location for families who love outdoor adventures and exploring new places. If you’re planning a trip to White Sands National Park with kids, here are some tips and ideas to make your experience unforgettable.
Getting to White Sands National Park
White Sands National Park is located in south-central New Mexico, near the city of Alamogordo. The nearest major airport is in El Paso, Texas, which is about an hour and a half drive away. If you’re driving from other parts of the country, White Sands is located off of Highway 70 between Las Cruces and Alamogordo.
Where to Stay
There are several great camping options near White Sands National Park. We personally stayed at the Alamgordo / White Sands KOA, which is located about 15-20 minutes away from the park. The KOA was primarily pull-thrus and fit our 40′ fifth wheel.
If you’re interested in boondocking, there are several BLM lands near the park where you can camp for free. Just be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and practice responsible camping.
Activities for Kids at White Sands National Park
Sledding the White Sands Dunes
One of the most popular activities at White Sands National Park is sledding down the sand hills. Yes, you read that right – sledding on sand! The park sells plastic sleds at the gift shop for around $20, but you can also bring your own. The KOA that we stayed at gave us sleds to borrow for free!
Just make sure the sled has a smooth bottom and is made of sturdy material that won’t break or scratch the sand.
Sledding on the sand hills is a thrilling and unforgettable experience for kids of all ages. Just be sure to wear sun protection, as the sand can get hot in the sun.
Hiking at White Sands
White Sands National Park has several hiking trails that offer stunning views of the dunes and the surrounding mountains. The most popular hiking trail is the Interdune Boardwalk, which is an easy and accessible 0.4-mile trail that takes you through the heart of the sand dunes. The trail is stroller-friendly and perfect for families with young children.
If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, the Alkali Flat Trail is a 5-mile loop that takes you to the remote and rugged backcountry of the park. This trail is not recommended for young children or inexperienced hikers, as it can be strenuous and exposed to the sun.
Junior Ranger Program at White Sands National Park
The Junior Ranger program at White Sands National Park is a great way for kids to learn about the park’s unique geology and wildlife. The Junior Ranger Programs at National Parks offer fun and educational activities that encourage kids to explore the park, learn about the environment, and earn a Junior Ranger badge.
To participate in the program, kids can pick up a Junior Ranger activity booklet at the visitor center. The booklet includes a series of activities and challenges that require kids to explore the park, complete educational activities, and attend ranger-led programs.
Picnicking on the Dunes
White Sands National Park is a great place to have a picnic with your family. There are several picnic areas located throughout the park, including the Dunes Drive Picnic Area, which offers stunning views of the dunes and the mountains.
Just be sure to pack plenty of food and water, as there are no restaurants or stores inside the park. Also, be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out your trash.
Stargazing
White Sands National Park is located in a remote and dark location, which makes it a perfect place for stargazing. The park offers several ranger-led stargazing programs.
Overall, visiting White Sands National Park with kids is an incredible experience that your family will remember for a lifetime. From sledding down the sand hills to hiking through the dunes and stargazing under the clear night sky, there are so many amazing activities to enjoy in this unique and breathtaking park.
Just be sure to plan ahead, bring plenty of water and sun protection, and follow the park’s rules and regulations to help preserve this special place for future generations to enjoy.
