5 Things to Do Near Rondout Valley Thousand Trails

We spent a couple of weeks in Rondout Valley Thousand Trails campground in Accord, NY. While, the campground had a lot of activities, we also went out exploring a bit too. You can see our YouTube video below and also check out our article about our 5 things to do near Rondout Valley Thousand Trails at the end.

Here are 5 Things to Do Near Rondout Valley Thousand Trails in Accord, NY.

Arrowood Farms Brewery and Distillery

We are always down for a local brewery, winery or distillery that is kid and family friendly. Arrowood Farms is less than 0.5 mile from Rondout Valley Campground. Simply turn left at the exit of the campground and you will be at the Farm within a couple of minutes.

There is a ton of outdoor seating and space with an outdoor bar and food truck. There are games for the kids to play like cornhole and Jenga. They even have chickens!

The beer was good, the whiskey was great and the food truck food was amazing, so we give this two thumbs up and highly recommend it.

Saunderskill Farms

This place quickly became our favorite place while staying at the campground. Again, less than 0.5 from the campground, it has local produce and donuts….. fresh donuts made daily!

We came to Saunderskill Farms for donuts, vegetables, pies, meats, ice cream, iced coffees, cider donuts and more.

We were there in July and it was near the end of blueberry season, but we were able to pick your own blueberries and the girls had a blast doing it!

This is the number one place we tell everybody who asks us about Rondout Valley.

FDR Presidential Library and Museum

This one is a littler further of a drive than the first two, but still well worth it. It is located in Hyde Park, NY which is about 30 miles from the campground. There are two main parts of the National Park, FDR’s Home and the FDR Presidential Library and Museum.

We have our Access Pass for National Parks, so we were able to get access to the home and the library for free.

The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt is included in your purchase of a ticket to the National Park System, however, the home is a separate charge if you wish to do that.

You may need more than one visit to truly appreciate and bring in everything that the Presidential Library and Museum have to offer.

The Library part is broken down by each period of FDR’s childhood, early political days then his time as President. The World War II section made me (Chris) choke up.

We also toured his childhood home and home that he used even during his Presidency. It was very interesting to see the way the home was set up for his disability and utilizing a wheelchair.

The park admission also includes the Presidential Garden and the burial site of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Lake Minnewaska State Preserve

10 miles down the road is Lake Minnewaska State Preserve and wow, is this place beautiful. We had no clue what to expect other than the fact that there was some hiking and a beach area that you could swim at. We were in the middle of a heat wave in July at the time we were there, so we knew we wanted the beach!

What we didn’t expect to see were the views. They were incredible!

If you have ever seen the movie Grown Ups 2 where the adults are forced to jump off the cliff into the water, that is exactly what it looked like! I even had to Google the movie to see if it was filmed there because it looked that much like it.

The visitor center had a ton of hands on, interactive learning games for the kids. We spent over 30 minutes just in the visitor center.

We did not do any of the hikes because we had all of our stuff with us for the beach area. There are multiple swimming sections of the lake, but the one we went do did not open until 11:45 and since we went on a Sunday, it was packed! Like, jam packed!

Kelder’s Farm

Kelder’s Farm is tough to miss when coming into the campground. You will definitely not miss the Original World’s Largest Garden Gnome! Apparently, it is no longer the world’s largest, so key point is the Original.

There is much more to do at this farm, but it definitely is not free.

The farm is massive. Below are a few of the activities available:

  • Jumping Pillow and Jumping Pad
  • Combine Slide
  • Farm Animals
  • Milk a Cow (pretend cow)
  • Mini Golf
  • Corn Crib (sandbox but with corn)
  • Corn Maze
  • Pumpkin / Apple Cannons depending on the season
  • Much, much more!

It is closed during the winter, so keep that in mind.
